Dick's Priorities for the next four Years

Below is a list of my priorities for the next four years. The topics that I would like to tackle fall basically into four categories: Environment, development, business and commercial, and education.

Environment

  • Protect the remaining open space, scenic views and vistas, and historical artifacts around Yucaipa, find ways to acquire additional land to link disconnected open space, and make it accessible for Yucaipa’s residents for recreational use.

  • Support and strengthen local organizations that take care of our surroundings and support citizen volunteering groups (E.g., Adopt-A-Trail program).

Development

  • In view of current trends that indicate a change of our society towards smaller housing units with a reduced ecological foot print, support the development or redevelopment of smartly planned condensed housing, with good access to transportation (public and private) and local shopping.

  • Support the creation of self-contained local neighborhoods that allow residents to work and shop locally.

  • Support resident backed projects that enrich the community (E.g., activity centers, sports complexes, trails, play grounds, bike paths, etc.).

Business & Commercial

  • Support the creation of innovative small businesses that have the potential to be self-sustained at our location (E.g., The business incubator on 5th street). Create a business friendly environment, with incentives and help for new businesses. Help to promote businesses (E.g., Yucaipa First).

  • Create an optimal environment and lay the administrative framework for a Yucaipa business park that allows businesses to interact and be successful. Invest in relevant infrastructure, such as, high speed communication, access to I10, upgraded utilities required by increased commercial use. Scout for opportunities to bring new and established businesses that are compatible with Yucaipa’s philosophy of living to our city.

Education

  • Foster the collaboration between local businesses, schools, and Crafton Hills College (E.g., open house events, internships, business specific projects, etc.)

  • Support the growth and academic strengthening of Crafton Hills College.

  • Find funding and invest in infrastructure that benefits our schools (E.g., structures, lab equipment, etc.)

  • Support academic programs that strengthen our schools, encourage and fund after school programs where students can learn new skills that prepare them for their adult lives.
